Sixteen

ANNA

I'm more excited about this day than I should be. I had trouble sleeping last night, too many thoughts running through my head trying to ram their way in all at once.

Today is the day for recon, even though I barely slept. I'm up early and ready in comfortable clothes. I would actually wear sweats if I had them but I'm more than okay with these black leggings and thick sweatshirt I got on.

I know it's only around six in the morning at least that's what the alarm clock tells me. I pound on the door to let someone know to tell Worm that I'm ready. It’s not like I have a phone to call him.

It takes almost fifteen minutes for him to show up. “Damn girl, you couldn't have waited till like nine.”

I smile, “some of us have nothing better to do besides be locked up in a room, so why wait?”

We make our way towards the kitchen first. The huge property is fairly silent for this early hour, but Martha is there and she's already making us breakfast. Worm must have told her ahead of time.

She makes us a big spread of everything. We take our food at the breakfast bar and Martha joins us.

This is comfortable, it's inviting and relaxing. I'm able to learn a little bit more about her.

Martha was around when Maxim was a child, she's careful not to mention any other family names or the last name, it's like they're all hiding a big secret. She keeps reminding me that he was a great boy and now he's a good man.

There were a couple of guards that came in as we were eating. We were so silent they didn't hear us as they just shuffled on in.

“... Hey man, I understand you wanting to get with that chick, but she’s all the way in LA. You honestly think she's going to come over three thousand miles here to New York to spend time with your ugly ass?” They both walk in, stopping in their tracks as they see me there, shocked.

Worm has a scowl on his face but doesn't seem too worried. They had to figure out I would eventually find out where we were. At least one problem is solved, now onto about forty-seven more.

After breakfast, both of us thank Martha then walk around exploring the different rooms in the house. There's a sitting room for men and one for women. A gift room, yes a place to wrap gifts. Worm told me there's a bowling alley in the basement, but I really didn't care to see it. I think the best I've ever bowled was a twenty-one.

The media room and the library are the ones I'm most excited about.

The guards, if they see us coming, walk in a different direction. I find it weird, like they're avoiding me, maybe there is something on my face.

It's probably what Maxim told them. I don't bother to ask Worm, he seems in a good mood and I want to keep it that way.
